Airflow to the lungs is restricted or blocked

How do you find out if you have snoring and sleep apnea?

  • Significant other or family members maybe able to tell you about your snoring.
  • Only accurate way is to be tested
    • Sleep clinic
    • Home test
  • What sleep test can tell you
    • Blood oxygenation
      • Should never go below 90%
      • Should not drop more than 3%
    • Snoring level
      • Lower than a freight train
    • Pulse rate
      • Should not race
    • Sleep position
    • Apnea events
    • Arousal from sleep pattern
    • How much sleep
      • 6 to 7 hours is all you need to be rested
    • Sleep stages
      • Stage 1: nodding off
      • Stage 2: regular sleep
      • Stage 3: rejuvenating sleep
        • Not enough  and you wake up tired
      • REM (rapid eye movement)
        • You need it to live
  • Sleep apnea takes you out of normal sleep patterns
  • Helping your snoring with lifestyle changes
    • Lose weight and improve eating habits
    • Avoid tranquilizers, sleeping pills and antihistamines before you go to bed
    • Avoid alcohol and heavy meals or snacks at least 4 hours before you go to bed
    • Establish regular sleeping habits
    • None of this will correct structural problems you may have

Snoring and sleep apnea treatment options

  • Surgery
    • Tonsils and adenoid removal
    • Soft palate implants to stiffen the soft palate
    • UPPP- Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty tightens and restructures the flabby tissues in the throat and palate
  • MAD – mandibular advancement device that holds the lower jaw forward during sleep to keep the tongue from causing constricture of the airflow
  • Example: somnomed appliance
  • CPAP – continuous positive airway pressure is a mask that fits over your nose and/or mouth and pushes air into your airway
  • A combination of the different treatments
    • You may need more than one of the options to ensure breathing at night
