Keep Your Teeth Healthy During the Holidays!
Keep your teeth healthy during the upcoming holiday season by following Northern Dental Care’s dental tips!
- Beverages that you consume during the holiday season can be acidic and damaging to the teeth. Sugar or high acidity content can initiate the cavity causing bacteria in the oral cavity to break down the natural protective coating of the teeth (enamel). Cavity causing bacteria in the mouth love sugar and carbohydrates, in turn they break these down and thus raise the acidity level in the oral cavity. Some beverages we drink can have a high acidity level which can cause erosion of the teeth. To reduce sugar and acid exposure to your teeth use a straw to drink these beverages if possible. Water is also a great to rinse sugar from the teeth and buffer acidity levels in the mouth.
- Sticky candy is laden with sugar and when it sticks onto the teeth it can present a perfect environment for dental decay to begin. Sugar intake can naturally increase your risk of cavities but hard or sticky can can be exponetially more harmful. Hard candy when chewed has the potential to fracture your tooth while sticky candy can get stuck on the biting surface or in between the teeth. If you chose to eat these candies then make sure to brush, floss and rinse with a fluoridated mouthrise daily to keep your tooth enamel strong.
- When travelling don’t forget your trusty toothbrush and floss! Even with busyness of the holiday season it is important not to let regular oral healthcare to fall by the wayside. Brush 3x day, floss alteast once and use a mouthrinse with fluoride. If you can’t brush drink water or a chew a piece of sugarless gum during the day to increase salivary flow to natural cleanse the mouth.
Great snacks for the holidays:
- Crunchy fruits and vegetables
- Beans and bean dips
